This is my grandad Arthur (Archie) Bruce. I have made this site for him as not only was he my granddad there is a very weird story to be told. If you have time please read on. Archie Bruce was born in Leicester in 1902 he joined the army as a young lad and was discharged through an accident which left him partially sighted. He worked in Squires bakery on the Narborough Road then on to Frears and Blacks bakery on Abby Lane (now B&Q) He eventually went to live in Gorleston with his wife Agnes where they ran a small guest house on the Avondale road. One day in 1946 my grandad was on the Gorleston beach when he noticed two young lads on the breakwater, the sea was very rough. Suddenly a huge wave came and washed both lads into the sea. My granddad went in to rescue them, he managed to bring out one of the lads then went back in for the other. Sadly, try as he could he was not able to rescue the other lad. This affected my granddad so much as he was able to see him but not reach him in time. My granddad was given a £100 as a reward which in those days was a good sum of money and he was also recognised by the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust (see gallery for pics) This story has been told to the family through the years. It was around 5 years ago that a shoebox of photos emerged and along with it a newspaper cutting of the sad event. The two lads turned out to be 10 year old twins Mathew and Royce Moore. It was Royce Moore that drowned that day in 1946.
Here is where the story takes a on strange coincidence. In 1983 I gave birth to a son, I was stuck for a name as I really wanted a little girl and I’d only picked girls names. My favorite one was Mercedes, but now I was stuck for a boys name so I opted for Royce (after Rolls Royce) Although I knew about my granddads story I had no idea at the time of naming my son that the lad who had drowned that day way back in 1946 was also called Royce. My granddad died in 1974 so he never got to meet my son.
Sadly my Royce died just a year ago 6th December 2005.He was 22 years old.

Throughout his life my son has guided me in his own little way. It was because of Royce I made certain decisions in my life that I now know, years later, to be the right ones.

My conclusion....I think my granddad sent me my own special angel to guide me through the times in my life when I needed help. Now I am older and a lot wiser and I have a lot to thank my son for. Now his work is done granddad has called him back to heaven. All our children are special to us but I know Royce was extra special. Please take a look at his page on gonetoosoon (Royce Scarlett)

R.I.P. Grandad Its been a long time but I think of you often, your thick white hair and your tattoos, the one that I'd try to rub off your arm when I was little girl. Look after my son for me, I don't have to tell you is name, you already know and I'm sure you were waiting for him along with my dad. XXX

Another year has passed us by,
and still we think of you and cry;
Precious are you in our hearts,
which are very much still torn apart.
Our angel in heaven is what you are,
Far, far beyond a distant star;
But one day soon again we’ll meet,
and YOU will be the one to greet,
each of us at Heaven’s gate,
with a hug and kiss, we just can’t wait!

Wish I could visit Heaven,
if only for a day.
So many things I should have told you,
should have taken the chance to say.
How I thought of you as special,
unique, kind, honest and true.
The mould was surely broken,
when they had made,
the irreplaceable you.

Lots of love to you and family xxx

What a coincedence and what a lovely close family like mine was!!!

amazing

Hi Mich and family. I've just read the tributes to Royce and decided to look upon your Grandads site as well. All I can say is AMAZING! Royce's name was beautiful anyway but to find out what the other little boys' name was, well I dont have to say. I just hope that you find some comfort with this knowledge and that you and your family know that your Grandad is looking after not 1 but 2 precious Royces.xxxxx

When you think your road is rocky and a bit too steep to climb,
When you think your guardian angel needs to work some overtime,
When your personal jigsaw puzzle has some pieces that won't fit,
When life has no rhyme or reason and you can't make sense of it,
YOU NEED A RAINBOW When the clouds are dark and stormy
And have blocked the sunshine out, And perhaps you start to wonder
What this life is all about, When your trials and tribulations seem to be so hard to bear,
And it seems there is no justice anytime or anywhere, LOOK FOR YOUR RAINBOW
When the molehills seem like mountains and the obstacles are great,
When you feel so heavy laden and your worries just inflate,
When you can't see any ending to the problems that you face,
For they just keep on increasing and you need some breathing space,
PRAY FOR YOUR RAINBOW It may be you need to look a little higher than before,
Or perhaps a little further to see past the clouds once more.
But you'll know it's worth the effort when your rainbow you can see,
And you understand the love behind God's creativity,
SEARCH FOR YOUR RAINBOW
For your rainbow holds a promise that this turbulence will cease,
And your inner conflict will become, instead, deep inner peace.
But if, though searching, you can't find your rainbow at this time,
Until you can, I say with love, you're welcome to share mine!
